On January 31, 2025, the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation marked its first Community Day activity of the year with an impactful visit to Collège La Grace, Simbock. This initiative focused on an essential but often neglected subject: Menstruation.

The session was facilitated by Ms. Regina Sinsai, Health Research Associate at the Nkafu Policy Institute and Dr. Etogo Pancrace Gwladys, Medical Doctor. They emphasized the importance of menstrual hygiene, sharing practical tips and fostering an open dialogue with the students. The presentations highlighted the need for proper menstrual care and the role it plays in the overall well-being of young girls.

However, as the discussions unfolded, it became evident that many female students were timid and hesitant to participate. This shyness underscored the deep-seated stigma and cultural taboos that still surround menstruation. Such barriers often prevent young girls from seeking the information and support they need, both at school and at home.

One key takeaway from the day was the critical role families play in demystifying menstruation. Parents and guardians must foster open conversations about menstruation, normalizing it as a natural biological process rather than a subject of shame. Schools also have a responsibility to create safe spaces where students, both girls and boys, can learn and discuss these topics without fear or embarrassment.

Breaking the menstrual taboo is not a task for girls alone. Boys must also be sensitized about menstruation to foster empathy and understanding. By educating boys about the challenges their female peers face, we can combat stigma and create a more supportive environment for everyone. Inclusive education is key to building a society where menstruation is no longer a taboo but an accepted and understood part of life.

The Foundation’s visit to Collège La Grace is just the beginning. It highlighted the urgent need for continued efforts to address menstrual health and hygiene education in schools and communities. As we move forward, our goal is to make menstruation a normalized topic of conversation, dismantling the stigma and empowering young girls to embrace their health with confidence and pride.

The Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation remains committed to driving this change. Together, we can build a future where no girl feels ashamed or unprepared to manage her menstrual health.
