Meet Clinton Achale – An Extraordinary Young Cameroonian

By Denis A. Foretia, MD.MPH.MBA., [dropcap type="circle" color="#FFFFFF" background="#8C212A"]A[/dropcap] few months ago, I received an email that nearly brought me to tears. This email touched me not because the situation appeared helpless, but because I could vividly see how a brilliant and extremely gifted young man was about to lose his dreams. Mr. Ajong had written to the foundation to tell us about Clinton Achale, a young man from the tiny village of Etam near Kumba in the South West Region of Cameroon. Etam, like many of the villages in Cameroon, has no tap water and no electricity. Its only secondary [...]

Rencontrer Clinton Achale – Un jeune Camerounais extraordinaire

By Annette MOGOUM * (version en français) Natural assets for a clear emergence [dropcap type="circle" color="#FFFFFF" background="#8C212A"]C[/dropcap]ameroon has always placed socio-economic development at the core of its national policy. In its current vision, Cameroon is making development efforts with the goal of becoming an emerging country by 2035. Emergence is considered to be the intermediate stage between development and underdevelopment. It has an economic dimension, as well as a social and political one. Thus, emerging countries are those that are able to increase their economic growth and where the country's standard of living and its political structures converge to be [...]

The Silent Epidemic: Non-communicable diseases in Cameroon

By Julienne Stéphanie Nouetchognou, MPH - Health Policy Analyst [dropcap type="circle" color="#FFFFFF" background="#8C212A"]C[/dropcap]ardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases are often thought to be public health problems of significance only in developed countries. In reality, however, only 20 percent of chronic disease deaths occur in these countries, while 80 percent occur in developing countries where the vast majority of the world’s population lives. Cameroon, like other developing countries, is now experiencing the double burden of infectious and chronic, non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The burden of infectious diseases is largely driven by malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Yet, at the same time, [...]
