Background\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women in Africa make up 58% of the self-employed population and are more likely than men to choose entrepreneurship not because they have a burning passion or the right skills, but because of a lack of better opportunities. It is a well-known fact that if women participated in the global economy to the same degree as men, the world economy would gain an additional $11 trillion in annual GDP. Studies show that women\u2019s participation in the workforce contribute to the growth of a country\u2019s economy<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cameroon woman has for long been the economic backbone of the nation, yet she remains largely marginalized in the society generally and in the economic sector in particular. The 2019 statistics from the UN Office of Coordination of Human Affairs (OCHA) in Cameroon shows that 39% of the national population lives below the poverty line and this rate rises to 51.5% for women with 79.2% of them are underemployed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women are involved in so many income generating activities and various projects that helps to increase the country\u2019s national wealth while creating jobs that enhances the advancement of women and the family (Nkafu\u00a0DBI report, 2020). Despite this recognized potential, female entrepreneurs in Cameroon still faces enormous challenges (family constraints, lack of education and training, gender inequality, difficulty to access finance, fear of failure, and timidity) that hinders them from achieving prosperity and economic freedom.\u00a0<\/span>The vast majority of Cameroon women, regardless of educational level, find themselves in a disadvantaged position in the economic sphere. Despite the clear economic and social gains, numerous structural and cultural barriers impede women from entering, remaining, or advancing the business world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It therefore against this framework that the Small Business Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) of the Denis and Lenora\u00a0Foretia\u00a0Foundation seeks to promote the economic freedom and prosperity of female entrepreneurs in Cameroon by addressing\u00a0the challenges they face.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
