SUMMARY:2019 Nelson Mandela Memorial Forum
DESCRIPTION:ANNUAL FORUM COMMEMORATING THE NELSON MANDELA INTERNATIONAL DAY – FOR FREEDOM\, JUSTICE & DEMOCRACY IN THE WORLD.CONTEXT \nWe at the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation join the international community every year to celebrate the Nelson Mandela International Day\, to shine light on the legacy of a man who positively influenced the 20th century and helped shape the 21st. Nelson Mandela played an influential role in the promotion of democracy\, peace and reconciliation and in unifying and inspiring people from all walks of life across the world. The UN General Assembly and the Assembly of the African Union have recognized Nelson Mandela as the embodiment of human rights\, democracy and peace\, and a champion of the global poor and their dignity. In its resolution 64/13 of 10 November 2009\, the General Assembly has designated 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day to commemorate annually his life and contribution to peace\, international justice and democracy. Moreover\, the Assembly of the African Union declared 2014–2024 the Madiba Nelson Mandela Decade of Reconciliation in Africa.\nIn times of turbulence and national crises as depicted today in many parts of Africa (including Cameroon) where violent conflicts have resulted from struggles for effective and inclusionary governance; perceived sense of  marginalisation and injustice; lack of fundamental freedoms; weak electoral processes and corrupt politico-administrative practices; the rise in intolerance\, social media hate speech and violent extremism\,  Nelson Mandela’s legacy shows us the power of positively resisting oppression\, of justice over inequality\, of dignity over humiliation\, of forgiveness over hatred.  In fact\, this legacy has never been so critically important as today when the international community is committed to promoting a peaceful\, just and inclusive world as depicted in the UN 2030 Sustainable Development agenda which states in its preamble:  “we are determined to foster peaceful\, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence. There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development.” It suffices for us to recall here the essential humanism that guided Nelson Mandela: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains\, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Nelson Mandela stood for the fundamental rights of all human beings\, regardless of gender\, nationality or race. The Nelson Mandela International day is also an annual international day of humanitarian action in celebration of his life and legacy. Also\, it is a catalyst to encourage everyone to change the world through voluntary community work.\nMandela’s Legacy resonates with the mission of the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation to catalyze Africa’s economic transformation by focusing on social entrepreneurship\, science and technology\, innovation\, public health and the implementation of progressive policies that together creates economic opportunities for all. Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy will be celebrated this year at the foundation on the 17thand 18thJuly 2019. While the official ceremony takes place on July 17\, July 18 will be reserved for community humanitarian activities to be carried out by all Foundation staff. The year’s conference will follow the tradition laid last year by awarding the 2019 Nelson Mandela Memorial Award to recognize an individual whom by virtue of his/her actions exemplifies the character and commitment to human rights as espoused and practiced by President Mandela. The Forum will be held under the theme “Nelson Mandela – A Fighter for Justice and Human Rights”.\nPURPOSE OF THE EVENT\n      This event aims at celebrating Nelson Mandela’ life and legacy\, in the context of promoting and protecting human rights and human dignity through social justice\, reconciliation and democratic ideals. Depending on the theme of the year to be adopted\, participants will reflect on Mandela’s lifelong struggle for democracy and peace in the context of the current struggle for sustainable peace in Cameroon through an inclusive and democratic national dialogue.\nEXPECTED OUTCOME\nA summary report on the discussion and recommendation will be published by the Nkafu Policy Institute of the Foundation and be submitted to relevant government and international stakeholders interested in the struggle for sustainable peace and development in Cameroon.\nWHO CAN TAKE PART?\nThe foundation invites to the event\, for their participation\, eminent persons (from the government\, international community\, diplomatic corps\, academia\, civil society representative\, the media) that embody the virtues of Nelson Mandela  on various national and global platforms for the advancement of human rights\, democracy and peace in Cameroon and the world. The event is also open to the general public pending timely registration on the event’s website. In all\, the foundation expects 70-100 people. \n.fusion-button.button-22 .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-22 i {color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22 {border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22 .fusion-button-icon-divider{border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22:hover .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-22:hover i\,.fusion-button.button-22:focus .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-22:focus i\,.fusion-button.button-22:active .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-22:active{color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22:hover\, .fusion-button.button-22:focus\, .fusion-button.button-22:active{border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22:hover .fusion-button-icon-divider\, .fusion-button.button-22:hover .fusion-button-icon-divider\, .fusion-button.button-22:active .fusion-button-icon-divider{border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22{width:auto;}\nREGISTER TO ATTEND

SUMMARY:Nkafu Debates: Economic Freedom vs Foreign Aid
DESCRIPTION:ECONOMIC FREEDOM SHOULD BE VALUED OVER DEVELOPMENT AIDCONCEPT NOTEFor more than 60 years\, international agencies and donor organizations/countries have given aid to developing countries to stimulate economic development\, yet poverty has been persistent in many of these recipient nations. Nowadays\, economists and development agencies have recognized the importance of institutions that support economic freedom and property rights in promoting development. However\, nations and developing agencies continue to provide aid to developing countries. This raises two important questions: should economic freedom be valued over development aid or vice versa?\nCombining data available on The 2018 Index of Economic Freedom and The World Bank Poverty Indicators suggests that countries most lacking in economic freedom are about 30 times more likely to live below the poverty threshold when compared with countries ranking top in the economic freedom index. South Korea and Ghana for example had the same GDP per capita in 1957\, but the former later embraced economic freedom (foreign investment\, trade liberalization\, etc.)\, while the latter instead went down another path\, with a socialist government sustained by foreign aid. By 1990\, South Korea’s GDP was 10 times that of Ghana.\nSub-Saharan Africa is an aid magnet and more than $400 billion has flowed into this sub-region since 1970. If foreign aid worked\, then Africa would be booming in prosperity. Contrarily\, countries that were once poorer than much of Africa (South Korea\, Singapore\, Taiwan and Hong Kong) but adopted free markets and globalism in trade developed much more than Africa. This prompts one to insinuate that economic freedom- and not development aid- is the proven escape hatch from an otherwise never-ending loop of intergenerational poverty.\nEven though Cameroon is dominated by a strong central government with persistent human rights problems\, and ranks 145th out 180 countries in The 2019 Index of Economic Freedom\, the net official development assistance and official aid received in the country was reported at $756\,460\,000 in 2016\, (World Bank\, 2017). As a welfare state\, it falls under the category of “mostly unfree” countries with high tax rates (the government wage bill is a 1/5 of the annual budget\, VAT 19.25% and corporate tax rate of 33% – higher than Nigeria’s 30%). There are several state-owned enterprises operating on deficits and sometimes depending on bailout money and subsidies from the state. The country continues to suffer from endemic corruption\, weak rule of law\, poor infrastructure\, top-heavy civil service and a large inefficient parastatal system. Cameroon has a bloated government (66 ministers and state secretaries) for an economy with a GDP of $35 billion\, while South Africa with a GDP of $350 billion has 33 ministerial portfolios. There exists several regulations and it ranks 166th out of 190 countries in The Doing Business Index for 2017.\nIntent of Event\nThe aim of this debate is to bring together experts in the fields of economic freedom\, economic development and development aid to exchange their different views on prioritizing economic freedom over development or vice versa.\nThis is live-streamed public debate on the subject “Economic Freedom ought to be valued over Development Aid”. The unfavorable business climate in Cameroon is trigger by frequent administrative bottlenecks and red tape- and prevalence of public enterprises limits foreign investment. Prices remain heavily regulated and enforcement of contracts is neither timely nor efficient. Cronyism is systemic and corruption is endemic in all sectors. These experts will explore and analyze their views on the right development model for Cameroon- economic freedom or aid?\n \nWho will attend?\nThis event will bring together participants across various areas of expertise\, economists\, members of government\, lecturers\, entrepreneurs\, donor organizations\, humanitarian organizations\, NGO’s\, university students\, the general public and other civil society actors.\nParticipation Fee\nThere will be no registration fee.\nAreas of concern\nDevelopment Aid; Economic Freedom; Economic Development; Aid Effectiveness\, Rule of Law; Public Policy; International Trade and Competition.\nLocation\nThe event shall take place at Mansel Hotel\, Quartier Fouda – Yaoundé.\nTarget participants: 60\nExpected outcomes\nAt the end of this event\, participants should be able to:\nUnderstand the notions of development aid and economic freedom vis-à-vis\nUnderstand the nexus between economic freedom and development aid.\nUnderstand why economic freedom should be prioritize over development aid or vice versa.\n \nPanelists:\nHon. Soub Lazare (Economic Freedom) – Member of parliament Wouri – East .\nMr. Emmanuel Chesami (Development Aid) – Director of Communication\, Promotion and Capacity Development- Standards and Quality Agency (ANOR).\nProf. Alain Ndedi– Former Senior Consultant at the World Bank.\n \n.fusion-button.button-92 {border-radius:25px;}REGISTER TO ATTEND

Emmanuel Chesami (Aide au Developement) – Director of Communication\, Promotion and Capacity Development- Standards and Quality Agency (ANOR).\nProf. Alain Ndedi (liberté économique) – Ancien consultant senior à la banque mondiale\n \n.fusion-button.button-91 {border-radius:25px;}INSCRIVEZ VOUS POUR Y PARTICIPER

SUMMARY:Challenges to Attaining Universal Health Coverage in Cameroon
DESCRIPTION:The Denis & Lenora FORETIA Foundation is pleased to inform you that we will be organizing an event on Universal Health Coverage at the Foundation’s headquarters – Opposite College Jesus Marie\, Simbock \, on Tuesday 2019 from 10:00am to 12:30pm.Universal Health Coverage basically involves providing essential\, and quality health services\, from health promotion to prevention\, treatment\, rehabilitation\, and palliative care to everyone irrespective of their societal status. However\, this is far from the reality in Cameroon due to a number of challenges such as limited funds available to finance healthcare\, and the critical shortage of qualified health personnel in Cameroon as classified by the WHO.The purpose of this event therefore\, is to propose policy prescriptions that if implemented\, can contribute to the provision of essential and quality health services and reduce impoverishment associated with payment for health services. The objective of this event is to propose solutions through which Cameroon can accelerate its progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.\nModerator\nOdette Kibu\, MPH\nHealth Policy Analyst – Nkafu\nPanelists\nProf. Mbacham Wilfred\nProfessor of Public Health & Chair\, Graduate Programs – Univ of Yaounde 1\nDr. George Bwelle\nGeneral Surgeon & President of the Association of Competencies for a Better Life (ASCOVIME)\nMme. SUMMARY:Why FACTS and Think Tanks Matter
DESCRIPTION:CONCEPT NOTEThink tanks are public-policy research analysis and engagement organizations that generate policy-oriented research\, analysis\, and advice on domestic and international issues\, thereby enabling policy makers and the public to make informed decisions about public policy (Credit: Jim McGann). Think Tanks play big roles in transforming our societies. They are involved in promoting research-based decision-making in the areas of education\, entrepreneurship\, economic development\, leadership\, healthcare innovation\, governance and democracy\, to name but a few. For example\, they produce policy briefs for decision-makers that are in fact\, findings and recommendations from research papers in an easy-to-read and short document (2\,500 words maximum). The 2017 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report\, listed 7\,815 think tanks around the world. 8.5% (of 7\,815) are based in Sub-Sahara Africa i.e.\, 665 think tanks. Cameroon has 22 think tanks that are listed\, and\, the first Cameroonian think tank comes in the 88thposition\, out of 90 in Sub-Sahara Africa.\nThe purpose of this event is to highlight the critical role Think Tanks play in Cameroon. This is also an opportunity to explore the think tank landscape in Cameroon. An objective is to create a platform that engages and mobilizes think tanks which have demonstrated their ability to produce independent and cutting-edge analysis on a wide range of topics.\nThis event is in line with the vision and mission of the Nkafu Policy Institute\, a think tank at the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation. Our mission is to catalyze the economic transformation of African countries by focusing on social entrepreneurship\, science and technology\, health\, and the implementation of development policies which will create economic opportunities for all.\nParticipation\nThe event is open to the public. However\, specific interests include:\nThink tanks;\nResearchers and Analysts;\nPolicy makers;\nNon-governmental organizations & civil societies;\nJournalists\, etc.\nFee\nThere is no registration fee.\nAreas of concern\nThe event consists of two panel discussions of two (2) hours each. Each panel is composed of four think tank representatives and one individual from the Ministry of research and innovation. They will be addressing the general question: “Why Facts and Think Tanks Matter in Cameroon’’. Specific discussions will target the following topics:\nPanel 1:  The Role Think Tanks Play in Cameroon\nPanel 2:  The Think Tank Landscape in Cameroon\nExpected outcomes\nAt the end of this event\, participants should be able to:\nUnderstand the role Think Tanks play in Cameroon and why facts are relevant in policy;\nEvaluate the current impact of Think Tanks in Cameroon;\nKnow the challenges Think Tanks face in undertaking their mission in the country;\nPropose policies that can help Think Tanks have greater outreach in Cameroon.\nDate: Thursday 31stJanuary 2019.\nTime: 9:00 am to 4:00pm.\nVenue: Conference Hall\, Muna Foundation (724-742 Rue de Narvick\, across the General Directorate of Taxation and adjacent to the Ministry of Public Contracts in the Yaoundé City Center).\nTentative Programme\n9:00 – 9:30                  Arrival and registration of participants.\n9:30 – 9:45                  Opening remarks.\n9:45 – 10:45                First panel discussion on ‘The Role Think Tanks Play in Cameroon’.\n10:45 – 11:15              Questions – Answers.\n11:15 – 11:30              Coffee break.\n11:30 – 12:30              Second panel discussion on ‘The Think Tank Landscape in Cameroon’.\n12:30 – 13:00              Questions – Answers.\n13:00 – 13:15              Vote of thanks and closing remarks.\n13:15 – 14:00              Finger food break and networking.\n14:00                           End of the event & departure.\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:SBEC – Growing and Sustaining Your Business
DESCRIPTION:Small and medium enterprises in Cameroon make up more than 90 percent of all businesses in the country. They are estimated to employ more than 60 percent of Cameroonians\, but unfortunately more than 70 percent of SMEs are in the informal sector. Businesses thrive in countries with significant economic freedoms and according to the 2017 Economic Freedom Report published by the Fraser Institute\, Cameroon is classified as least free. This means the regulatory framework to allow innovation and SME growth must be addressed in order to SMEs to grow and create jobs. How can we create the environment that will ensure that small and medium sized enterprises have the framework and opportunities to thrive? How do you grow and sustain your business? These and many more are some of the issues to be addressed during the SBEC Roundtable.PARTICIPANTS\nThis Roundtable is opened to the general public. Those of specific concerns include\nSmall business owners both in the formal and informal sectors\nTax advisors\nBusiness consultants\nEducators especially those with focus on entrepreneurship\nFarmers\nOwners of professional services such as lawyers\, accountants\, independent consultants etc\nGovernment representatives\nREGISTER BELOW

SUMMARY:2018 Small Business Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Foretia Foundation is pleased to inform you that we will be organizing the 2018 Small Business Forum in Yaoundé at Maison Provincial Centre D`Accueil Mvolye on September 19thprecisely at 9:00 a.m. This forum comes up not only to present the business landscape in Cameroon but also\, highlight the challenges small businesses face and how these setbacks could be overcome.Businesses thrive in countries with significant economic freedoms and according to the 2017 Economic Freedom Report published by the Fraser Institute\, Cameroon’s economy is classified as least free for businesses to thrive. Reason why\, the regulatory framework that allows innovation and Small and Medium Size Enterprise (SMEs)growth must be addressed in order for SMEs to grow and create jobs. Pertinent questions such as how can we create a conducive environment to enable businesses to thrive\, why SMEs in the formal sector pay close to 57 percent in taxes\, how can the legal system be improved to ensure a respect of property rights and the enforcement of contracts will be dissected in a hall full of businesspersons\, tax advisors\, legal and financial consultants amongst others. This rich and interesting forum will be handled by two panels consisting of erudite keynote speakers who will examine how to overcome regulatory challenges\, reforms to boost SMEs amongst other pertinent issues.Due to the hostile business environment in Cameroon and the challenges most of these SMEs face\,  it is our hope that you find this interesting and make time out off your busy schedule to attend this event. Worthy of note is the fact that\, this event is FREE to members who have registered in the SBEC network. However\, this event is strictly on invitation so kindly confirm your attendance by reaching out to us through the email; info@foretiafoundation.orgor call us through the number (+237) 698 645 524/653 782 581/2223 11584\nWe look forward to meeting you at the event.\nThanks for your continuous  support\nThe Foretia team
