Unfortunately\, almost 52% of them still live below the poverty line and 79.2% of them are underemployed. This underemployment rate is estimated at 70% for youth. To address all the root causes of SME underperformance and access to employment in Cameroon\, foster economic freedom\, and empower both women and youth in the country\, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation is implementing a project titled “Powering Prosperity and Economic Freedom for Women and Youths in Cameroon”. This project offers a comprehensive training program for young entrepreneurs for a period of 6 months to enable them to acquire viable skills in management and business\, regulatory processes\, finance and other capabilities necessary for overall improvement.\nObjective\nThe main objective of this 6-month SME flagship business management training\, is to assist businesses establish a comprehensive small business strategy and grow. In implementing its new National Development Strategy 2020-2030 (NDS30)\, the government’s main concern is to “achieve full and productive employment and guarantee all women and men\, including youths and people with disabilities\, decent work and equal pay for work of equal value. Indeed\, although they have appropriate levels of education for the jobs they want\, youths and women still need better trainings to prepare them for the job market. To support youths and women and help them access decent jobs\, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation is implementing a project titled “Powering Prosperity and Economic Freedom for Women and Youths in Cameroon”. This project offers in selected regions of Cameroon\, intensive Bootcamps that combine technical training workshops\, job applications and interview strategies\, experiential work-based learning opportunities and skills to improve the overall work performance. DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, June 16\, 2023Time: 10:00 am (Cameroon time)\, Onsite Event\nVenue: Mansel Hotel\, Yaoundé\nBy invitation only\n“Assessing the Contribution of Women to Economic Growth in Cameroon”\n1.        Background\nIn Cameroon\, 39% of the population lives below the poverty line (OCHA\, 2019). Women represent 51.5% of this poor population and 79.2% of them are underemployed or work in informal sector. Several factors explain this high vulnerability of women in the country: the vulnerable work of women\, unpaid family workers and/or the self-employed\, as a percentage of total employment\, estimated at 81%\, compared to 63% for men (World Bank\, 2019). Moreover\, boys have privileged access to quality education. Their gross enrollment rate in elementary school is estimated at 111%\, compared to 100% for girls (World Bank\, 2019). The Cameroon government has set itself\, among other objectives\, to significantly reduce these existing and persistent inequalities between men and women by 2030. The goal is to achieve double-digit economic growth\, reach the threshold of 25% of manufacturing production in the gross domestic product (GDP) and reduce the incidence of poverty to less than 10%. In this regard\, it intends to pursue its policy of equitable access for girls and boys\, men and women to education\, training\, and information; strengthen programs designed to encourage female and youth entrepreneurship; and intensify consultations with the banking system to open up credit to this segment of the population. These measures should ultimately facilitate the access of women and youth to material\, financial\, physical\, and intellectual resources to stimulate their entrepreneurial and professional activities and thereby contribute to economic growth.\n2.        Objectives\nThe main objective of this meeting is to discuss the challenges that women and young entrepreneurs still face in Cameroon and show what the impact on economic growth could be if these challenges are overcome. In implementing its new National Development Strategy 2020-2030 (NDS30)\, the government’s main concern is to “achieve full and productive employment and guarantee all women and men\, including youths and people with disabilities\, decent work and equal pay for work of equal value. Indeed\, although they have appropriate levels of education for the jobs they want\, youths and women still need better trainings to prepare them for the job market. To support youths and women and help them access decent jobs\, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation is implementing a project titled “Powering Prosperity and Economic Freedom for Women and Youths in Cameroon”. This project offers in selected regions of Cameroon\, intensive Bootcamps that combine technical training workshops\, job applications and interview strategies\, experiential work-based learning opportunities and skills to improve the overall work performance. Borgne Project reported that 48% of Cameroonians were living below the poverty line (2017) and according to a report published by world bank\, for Cameroon to be considered an emerging economy by 2035\, the GDP would have to increase by at least 8% annually. At the same time\, the country faces widespread disparities in freedom of economic access\, especially for women. SMEs can fix these problems because they are key to addressing economic parity and GDP growth while making measurable progress towards improving freedom and meeting the SDGs. This bold statement is based on the fact that SMEs are the main economic drivers in Cameroon\, but there are underperforming. In 2015\, the Ministry of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises\, Social Economy and Handicraft reported that while 95% of Cameroon’s economy was generated through SMEs\, SMEs only made up 36% of GDP. Regarding the report\, Laurent Serges Etoundi Ngoa\, the Minister\, said: “If SMEs were to contribute 50% of GDP\, we would already be an emerging country. 98% of Cameroon’s businesses are SMEs\, and 90% of those SMEs are “micro” enterprises (entities with fewer than 5 employees).\nThough business growth has been steadily rising for years\, 50% of new businesses fail within 3 years. SMEs are the main vehicle for economic outputs\, but they only have a small share of the economy and have a low success rate. This underperformance is a complex issue with multiple roots notably complex and high costly regulatory processes\, underdeveloped human capital and access to finance.\nWhen businesses fail\, they can’t create jobs talk less of stable and decent jobs. It is therefore imperative to support the growth and stability of small and medium-sizes enterprises so that to ensure the demand side of unemployment/underemployment for women and youths.\nSMEs have told us in various surveys that\, along with a more supportive environment from political and financial institutions to formalize\, they face a supply side issue for human capital. The workforce needs better business management and leadership capacity amongst other “21st Century” skills. SUMMARY:Effective Digitalization For The Development of Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) In Cameroon

In addition\, 90% of these SMEs are “micro” enterprises (entities with fewer than five employees). Though business growth has been steadily rising over the years\, 50% of new businesses fail within 3 years\, and about 80% die within the first 5 years. SMEs are the primary vehicle for economic outputs\, but they only have a small share of the economy and have a low success rate. Although these SMEs employ above 60% of the population\, 70% of the SMEs still operate informally and lack adequate managerial skills\, proper accounting procedures\, and sound financial planning. The majority of these SMEs do not have access to finance\, lack appropriate skillsets.\nThe challenges faced by SMEs increased with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic due to the barrier measures put in place. The production rate and the number of customers decreased with a direct impact on profits. GICAM\, in one of its 2021 report\, declared that 92% of companies indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic is having a very negative impact on their activities. Among those\, SMEs (61%) were the most affected.\nIn one of the webinars organized by the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) on the impact of COVID-19 on SMEs\, it became clear that the adaptation of several companies is linked to digitization. In addition\, the online service companies had instead made profits.  Then digitalization is one of the most effective solution to solve these SMEs problems. Studies show that women’s participation in the workforce contribute to the growth of a country’s economy \nThe Cameroon woman has for long been the economic backbone of the nation\, yet she remains largely marginalized in the society generally and in the economic sector in particular. The 2019 statistics from the UN Office of Coordination of Human Affairs (OCHA) in Cameroon shows that 39% of the national population lives below the poverty line and this rate rises to 51.5% for women with 79.2% of them are underemployed.  \nWomen are involved in so many income generating activities and various projects that helps to increase the country’s national wealth while creating jobs that enhances the advancement of women and the family (Nkafu DBI report\, 2020). Despite this recognized potential\, female entrepreneurs in Cameroon still faces enormous challenges (family constraints\, lack of education and training\, gender inequality\, difficulty to access finance\, fear of failure\, and timidity) that hinders them from achieving prosperity and economic freedom. The vast majority of Cameroon women\, regardless of educational level\, find themselves in a disadvantaged position in the economic sphere. DESCRIPTION:Background\nAlmost one in four people in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) were estimated to be undernourished in 2017\, representing about one-third of the 821 million people suffering from chronic hunger globally (FAO et al.\, 2018). In addition to a high prevalence of chronic hunger in SSA\, many more people suffer from micronutrient deficiencies (Joy et al.\, 2014; Kumssa et al.\, 2015; Harika et al.\, 2017). There is clear evidence that the global economy for agriculture and food system is changing; spurred on by rapid population rise\, increase development and demand for agricultural commodities for biofuels. Almost 1.6 billion workers in the informal sector are significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic\, leading to a 60 per cent decline in their earnings. For these workers\, discontinuing work or working remotely is not an option because they could lose their jobs and livelihoods.\nIn Cameroon’s case\, the informal sector officially occupies 90% of the country’s active population and is productive as countries with a much higher economic level in Africa. According to an IMF report\, the informal sector in Cameroon contributes 20 to 30% to the country’s GDP. The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching economic consequences beyond the spread of the disease itself\, and efforts to quarantine it has not been effective\, therefore\, provoking an unprecedented downturn in the global economy.\nFollowing the publication by le Groupement Inter-Patronal du Cameroun (GICAM) on the “Impact of the Covid-19 Crisis on Companies in Cameroon”\, May-June 2020\, the proportion of companies negatively impacted by the Covid-19 crisis increased from 92% to 96.6%. According to statistics from the Ministry of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises\, Social Economy\, and Handicrafts\, there are more than 400\,000 active companies in the informal sector. Ninety-nine percent (99%) of these companies are SMEs\, whose active presence helps generate growth and redistribute wealth in society. The important role played by SMEs in reducing poverty in Cameroon is gaining recognition. SMEs contribute around 36% of Cameroon’s GDP\, make-up over 90% of businesses in Cameroon\, and employ above 60% of the population. That notwithstanding\, evident realities indicate that enormous potentials inherent in this sector are unfortunately not fully harnessed – especially given that more than 70% of SMEs still operate informally.\nHowever\, according to the General Business Census 2016 (RGE-2)\, the incubation and capacity building process of existing and potential entrepreneurs requires an enabling environment as SMEs still face significant challenges in terms of obtaining finance\, lack of appropriate managerial skills\, non-compliance with the Tax regulations\, complicated legal environment\, poor networking and lack of dedicated agencies to assist existing and potential entrepreneurs.  The incubation process\, growth\, and sustainability of most entrepreneurs in Cameroon can be greatly improved through private training and networking especially in business management and entrepreneurship skills.\nIt is based on the above-interwoven problems that the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation\, organizes the 2020 National Forum on the theme “The Entrepreneurship Ecosystem and Strategies for the growth of SMEs in Cameroon” so as to discuss strategies which entrepreneurs can put in place to achieve sustainable growth in Cameroon.\nGENERAL OBJECTIVE \nThe main objective of this forum is to discuss the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in Cameroon and seek possible solutions to these problems in other to achieve a favorable entrepreneurial ecosystem. \n SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES\nThe specific objectives are to: \nFind ways of attracting Investors and customers;\nFacilitate access to finance and business registration;\nIdentify networking opportunities for SMEs at national and international level;\nProvide an opportunity for SMEs to exhibit their products and services;\nIdentify challenges faced by SMEs in Cameroon and share best practices;\nDevelop the SBEC network. \nTARGET AUDIENCE \nSBEC Network members\nOther dynamic entrepreneurs from the SBEC database \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:L’écosystème Entrepreneurial Et Les Stratégies Pour La Croissance Des PME Au Cameroun\nDate : le 11   Décembre 2020 – Heure : de 8 h à 13 h 30\nLieu : Fondation Foretia \nCONTEXTE\nAu Cameroun\, les petites et moyennes entreprises (PME) sont considérées comme des vecteurs de création d’emplois et de richesse. Selon les statistiques du ministère des petites et moyennes entreprises\, de l’économie sociale et de l’artisanat\, il y a plus de 400.000 Entreprises actives dans le secteur informel et de celles- ci\, 99% sont des PME\, leur présence active permet de générer la croissance et redistribuer la richesse dans la société. Leur rôle important dans la réduction de la pauvreté au Cameroun est également de plus en plus reconnu. Les PMEs contribuent à environ 36% du PIB du Cameroun\, représentent plus de 90% des entreprises camerounaises et emploient plus de 60% de la population. Malgré cela\, des réalités évidentes indiquent que les énormes potentiels inhérents à ce secteur ne sont malheureusement pas pleinement exploités – d’autant plus que plus de 70% des PME opèrent encore de manière informelle.\nCependant\, l’incubation et le processus renforcement des capacités des entrepreneurs existants et potentiels nécessite un environnement favorable d’autant plus que les  PMEs font encore face à des défis importants en termes d’ obtention d’un financement \, le manque de compétences managériales appropriées\, la non-conformité avec les réglementations fiscales\, la complexité de l’environnement juridique\, le déficit en réseautage  et le manque d’agences dédiées pour aider les entrepreneurs existants et potentiels \, sur la base du recensement général des entreprises 2016 (RGE-2). Le processus d’incubation\, la croissance et la durabilité de la plupart des entrepreneurs au Cameroun peuvent être grandement améliorés grâce à la formation privée et au réseautage\, en particulier dans la gestion d’entreprise et les compétences en entrepreneuriat.\nC’est sur la base des problèmes imbriqués ci-dessus que le Centre des petites entreprises et de l’entrepreneuriat (SBEC) de la Fondation Denis et Lenora Foretia\, organise le Forum national 2020 sur le thème « L’écosystème de l’entrepreneuriat et les stratégies pour la croissance des PME au Cameroun » afin de discuter des stratégies que les entrepreneurs peuvent mettre en place pour parvenir à une croissance durable au Cameroun.\nOBJECTIF PRINCIPAL :\nL’objectif principal de ce forum est de discuter des défis auxquels sont confrontés les entrepreneurs au Cameroun et de rechercher des solutions possibles à ces problèmes afin de parvenir à un écosystème entrepreneurial favorable.\nOBJECTIFS SPÉCIFIQUES\nLes objectifs spécifiques sont de : \nTrouver des moyens d’attirer les investisseurs et les clients ;\nFaciliter l’accès au financement et à l’enregistrement des entreprises ;\nRecenser les possibilités de réseautage pour les PME au national et international niveau ;\nFournir opportunité pour les PME à EXHI mordit leurs produits et services ;\nRecenser les défis auxquels sont confrontées les PME au Cameroun et partage les meilleures pratiques ;\nDévelopper le réseau SBEC. \nPUBLIC CIBLE \nMembres du réseau SBEC\nAutres entrepreneurs dynamiques de la base de données SBEC. \nINSCRIVEZ-VOUS-ICI
