SUMMARY:2025 SBEC National Forum
DESCRIPTION:Date : April 29 & 30\, 2025\nVenue : Djeuga Palaca Hotel\, Yaoundé-Cameroon \nRegister Now \nBackground \n Cameroon\, like much of Sub-Saharan Africa\, faces a rapidly growing population of youth and women aspiring to participate in economic growth through entrepreneurship. Female entrepreneurs represent 24% of Africa’s workforce\, with the continent boasting the highest percentage of female entrepreneurship globally\, surpassing regions like Southeast Asia and Europe. Despite this\, Cameroon\, ranked third in Africa for female entrepreneurship\, faces numerous challenges preventing the full realization of youth and women-led businesses’ potential. \nCurrently\, a very large proportion of Cameroon’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operate in the informal sector\, with only 12% formally registered. Major obstacles—such as limited access to finance\, inadequate business planning\, a challenging tax structure\, and weak infrastructure—stifle the growth of women and youth-led enterprises. In addition\, public sector job creation has been unable to keep pace with the growing population\, particularly among the youth\, further pushing the need for private sector growth through entrepreneurship. \nRecognizing the critical role women and youth entrepreneurship will play in Cameroon’s economic future\, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation is organizing the 2025 SBEC Forum under the theme: “Scaling Up: Expanding Youth and Women-Led SMEs in Cameroon.” This forum seeks to foster discussions on how to scale up SMEs\, particularly those led by women and youth\, to drive inclusive economic development. \nObjectives \nThe 2025 SBEC Forum aims to catalyze the expansion of youth and women-led SMEs in Cameroon by creating a supportive ecosystem that addresses existing challenges and promotes sustainable business practices. The specific objectives are: \n\nAssess the effectiveness of current policies that support women and youth entrepreneurship in Cameroon.\nAdvocate for policy reforms that create a robust and sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem for women and youth.\nPromote public-private partnerships to enhance the entrepreneurship ecosystem and stimulate inclusive economic growth.\nRecommend policy solutions to improve access to finance\, streamline the tax burden\, and increase formalization of SMEs in Cameroon.\n\nThematic Areas \nDiscussions during the forum will focus on the following key areas: \n\nEducation and Entrepreneurship: Strengthening the educational system to instill entrepreneurial skills and long-term entrepreneurial thinking among youth.\nFinancial Inclusion: The role of microfinance institutions and other financial entities in expanding access to funding for youth and women-led SMEs.\nPublic-Private Partnerships: Enhancing collaboration between public institutions and private entities to build a more supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem.\nPromoting “Made in Cameroon”: Exploring how large distribution chains can support the growth and visibility of locally produced goods from women and youth-led enterprises.\n\n\nInfrastructure and Competitiveness: Examining the role of government infrastructure policies in improving the competitiveness and sustainability of SMEs.\n\nTarget Audience \n The 2025 SBEC Forum will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders\, including: \n\nPublic and Private SME Support Structures \nCivil Society Organizations \nPolicymakers from relevant government ministries such as the Ministry of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MINPMEESA)\, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education (MINJEC)\, Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family (MINPROFF)\, and others.\nEntrepreneurs and Cooperatives: Focus on women and youth-led businesses.\nFinancial Institutions: Including banks\, microfinance institutions\, and investment agencies.\nInternational Organizations: Engaged in cooperation and development.\nBusiness Consulting Firms: Offering expertise on scaling SMEs.\nPublic-Private Enterprises \nThe General Public: Interested in entrepreneurship and SME development.\n\nFormat of the Forum \n The 2025 SBEC Forum will be held in-person. The program will include: \n\nBreakout Sessions: Focused discussions on thematic areas.\nPanel Discussions: Expert panels featuring government officials\, entrepreneurs\, financial experts\, and international development partners.\nExhibitions: Showcase of products and services from youth and women-led SMEs.\nAwards Ceremony: Recognition of outstanding performers in the SBEC network for innovation and business growth.\n\nVenue and Date \n The Forum will be held from April 29 to 30\, 2025 in Yaoundé\, Cameroon. SUMMARY:Entrepreneurship\, Stakes\, and Challenges in Reducing Unemployment and Underemployment of Youths in Cameroon.
DESCRIPTION:SMALL BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTER (SBEC) WEBINARMarch 1st 2024\, 03 :00 pm (Cameroon Time) \nBackground \n“Youth unemployment is a time bomb”(Alexander Chikwanda\, former Zambian Minister of Finance)\, this quote alone explains the importance attached to the fight against youth unemployment and underemployment by African governments. According to the World Bank\, young people account for 60% of Africa’s unemployed. In Cameroon\, the unemployment and underemployment rates are reported at 3.3%\, based on the National Institute of Statistics (INS) Third Survey on Employment and the Informal Sector in Cameroon (EESI3) conducted in 2023\, with an overall working population of 54.2%. Within this working population\, 50.9% are employed\, while the underemployment rate has already reached 65% (INS\, 2021).\nEntrepreneurship is one of the possible solutions to this problem\, given the limited capacity of African governments\, including Cameroon\, to absorb the majority of young people into the civil service. Furthermore\, entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in alleviating poverty. However\, the process of business creation and development with the aim of reducing unemployment and underemployment in the country requires an enabling environment that provides sufficient physical\, financial\, human\, informational and relational resources and ensures their quality and quantity. The SBEC Department of the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation is organizing a webinar on this topic with the aim of strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Cameroon to play its part in reducing unemployment and underemployment\, under the theme: Entrepreneurship\, Stakes and Challenges in Reducing Youths Unemployment and Underemployment in Cameroon. \nObjectives \nThe main objective of this webinar is to strengthen Cameroon’s entrepreneurial ecosystem to better address youth unemployment and underemployment. The specific objectives are as follows: \nOutline strategies to overcome the challenges of entrepreneurship development in Cameroon\nPromote youth entrepreneurship and self-employment\nEvaluate the effectiveness of existing policies for the fight against unemployment and underemployment of youths in Cameroon. \nTarget audience \nThis event is open to Students\, Entrepreneurs\, Public and Private SME Support Structures\, Civil Societies\, Policy Makers\, Financial Institutions\, Investment Promotion Institutions\, International Organization for Cooperation and Development\, Business Consulting Firms and the general public. \nContact \nEmail: info@foretiafoundation.org  / Tel: (+237) 22 31 15 84 / 654 86 72 54\nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:SBEC Stakeholder Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, June 16\, 2023Time: 10:00 am (Cameroon time)\, Onsite Event\nVenue: Mansel Hotel\, Yaoundé\nBy invitation only\n“Assessing the Contribution of Women to Economic Growth in Cameroon”\n1.        Background\nIn Cameroon\, 39% of the population lives below the poverty line (OCHA\, 2019). Women represent 51.5% of this poor population and 79.2% of them are underemployed or work in informal sector. Several factors explain this high vulnerability of women in the country: the vulnerable work of women\, unpaid family workers and/or the self-employed\, as a percentage of total employment\, estimated at 81%\, compared to 63% for men (World Bank\, 2019). Moreover\, boys have privileged access to quality education. Their gross enrollment rate in elementary school is estimated at 111%\, compared to 100% for girls (World Bank\, 2019). The Cameroon government has set itself\, among other objectives\, to significantly reduce these existing and persistent inequalities between men and women by 2030. The goal is to achieve double-digit economic growth\, reach the threshold of 25% of manufacturing production in the gross domestic product (GDP) and reduce the incidence of poverty to less than 10%. In this regard\, it intends to pursue its policy of equitable access for girls and boys\, men and women to education\, training\, and information; strengthen programs designed to encourage female and youth entrepreneurship; and intensify consultations with the banking system to open up credit to this segment of the population. These measures should ultimately facilitate the access of women and youth to material\, financial\, physical\, and intellectual resources to stimulate their entrepreneurial and professional activities and thereby contribute to economic growth.\n2.        Objectives\nThe main objective of this meeting is to discuss the challenges that women and young entrepreneurs still face in Cameroon and show what the impact on economic growth could be if these challenges are overcome. More specifically\, it will be a matter of: \nPresenting the findings of a “State of Business” briefing written by the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) on the contribution of women to economic growth in Cameroon;\nHighlighting the opportunities for women’s entrepreneurship to foster economic growth in Cameroon;\nDiscussing ways in which women entrepreneurs can overcome the challenges they face in developing their businesses;\nGathering stakeholders’ inputs to create impact. \n3.        Target audience\nThe target audience of this meeting includes government officials\, Diplomats\, International Organizations\, Civil Societies Organizations\, Academia\, Entrepreneurs\, Employers organizations\, Financial Institutions\, Business Incubators\, and Media.\n4.        Expected outcome of the event\nStakeholders are convinced of the contribution of women-led SMEs to Cameroon’s economic growth and are determined to work collectively to improve the participation of these key players in economic development.\n5.        Contact\nEmail: info@foretiafoundation.org\nTel: (+237) 654 86 72 54

DESCRIPTION:Buea\, South west Region\nDate: 15th of June 2023\nVenue: Mile 18 junction\, Muea main road\, opposite Marvel Hotel (REGISTER NOW)\nOnline Zoom (Register Now) \nBackground\nThe employment situation in Cameroon is characterized by underemployment. The proliferation of the informal sector is one of the factors that explain this phenomenon. The informal sector employs about 90% of the active population. Youth are increasingly struggling to occupy decent positions within the various administrations because of a number of barriers\, including the inadequacy of the quality of the workforce in relation to the human resources required by the economy\, but much more because of the non-compliance of enterprises with the regulations on labor standards. In implementing its new National Development Strategy 2020-2030 (NDS30)\, the government’s main concern is to “achieve full and productive employment and guarantee all women and men\, including youths and people with disabilities\, decent work and equal pay for work of equal value. Indeed\, although they have appropriate levels of education for the jobs they want\, youths and women still need better trainings to prepare them for the job market. SUMMARY:Session 1: SMEs Flagship Training – Center Region
DESCRIPTION:6-MONTH BUSINESS MANAGEMENT TRAINING FLAGSHIPREGISTER NOW – Center Region\nYaoundé\nBackground\nIn Cameroon\, 80% of the businesses created die before their first 5 years of existence. Moreover\, most of them remain in the informal sector. According to recent statistics from the National Institute of Statistics\, about 90% of the labor force in Cameroon remains trapped in this sector. Women and youth are the most represented in this sector\, due to a number of challenges they still face. In the agricultural sector\, for example\, Cameroonian women represent 71.6% of workers in the informal agricultural sector. Unfortunately\, almost 52% of them still live below the poverty line and 79.2% of them are underemployed. This underemployment rate is estimated at 70% for youth. To address all the root causes of SME underperformance and access to employment in Cameroon\, foster economic freedom\, and empower both women and youth in the country\, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation is implementing a project titled “Powering Prosperity and Economic Freedom for Women and Youths in Cameroon”. SUMMARY:Project Launch Event – “Powering Prosperity and Economic Freedom For Women And Youths- Cameroon”
DESCRIPTION:Project Launch Event“POWERING PROSPERITY AND ECONOMIC FREEDOM FOR WOMEN AND YOUTHS- CAMEROON”\nDate: January 19\, 2023\nTime slot: 12:30pm to 3:30pm\nVenue:  Immaculate Heart of Mary\, Mvolyé – Yaoundé \nBackground \nThe Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center at the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation is implementing a project titled ‘Powering Prosperity and Economic Freedom for Women and Youths in Cameroon” with the financial support of the Rising Tide Foundation and the John Templeton Foundation.\nThe Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center is moved by reports of widespread disparities in freedom to economic access\, especially for women and youths. Borgne Project reported that 48% of Cameroonians were living below the poverty line (2017) and according to a report published by world bank\, for Cameroon to be considered an emerging economy by 2035\, the GDP would have to increase by at least 8% annually. At the same time\, the country faces widespread disparities in freedom of economic access\, especially for women. SMEs can fix these problems because they are key to addressing economic parity and GDP growth while making measurable progress towards improving freedom and meeting the SDGs. This bold statement is based on the fact that SMEs are the main economic drivers in Cameroon\, but there are underperforming. In 2015\, the Ministry of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises\, Social Economy and Handicraft reported that while 95% of Cameroon’s economy was generated through SMEs\, SMEs only made up 36% of GDP. Regarding the report\, Laurent Serges Etoundi Ngoa\, the Minister\, said: “If SMEs were to contribute 50% of GDP\, we would already be an emerging country. 98% of Cameroon’s businesses are SMEs\, and 90% of those SMEs are “micro” enterprises (entities with fewer than 5 employees).\nThough business growth has been steadily rising for years\, 50% of new businesses fail within 3 years. SMEs are the main vehicle for economic outputs\, but they only have a small share of the economy and have a low success rate. This underperformance is a complex issue with multiple roots notably complex and high costly regulatory processes\, underdeveloped human capital and access to finance.\nWhen businesses fail\, they can’t create jobs talk less of stable and decent jobs. It is therefore imperative to support the growth and stability of small and medium-sizes enterprises so that to ensure the demand side of unemployment/underemployment for women and youths.\nSMEs have told us in various surveys that\, along with a more supportive environment from political and financial institutions to formalize\, they face a supply side issue for human capital. The workforce needs better business management and leadership capacity amongst other “21st Century” skills. As a leading incubator and policy think tank\, our work addresses these multidimensional issues at the individual\, community\, and national levels. \nObjectives of the launch event \nThe main objective for this launch event is to bring awareness and gain stakeholder engagement to the issues faced by SMEs and the needs of 21st century job seekers in Cameroon as outlined in the PPEF project planning documents.\nThe specific objectives are as follows: \nInform the Cameroonian public of what the SMEs Flagship and Job Preparedness Bootcamp trainings offer as opportunities\,\nUse the event as a platform to recruit additional members into the SBEC network\nUse the event as a platform for system change advocacy\nUse the event as a platform to network with other organizations supporting SMEs growth in Cameroon\nUse the event as a platform to network with other organizations supporting employability in Cameroon \nModerators of the event \nDr. Jean Cedric Kouam and Ms. Vanessa Forbin \nTarget Audience \nThe target audience for this event includes government officials\, foreign diplomats\, international organizations\, civil society\, academia\, SMEs and job seekers. \nPanel Discussion \nThere shall be a panel discussion during the launch event under the theme;\nThe path to SND30 – best practice in supporting SMEs to be sustainable in creating decent jobs in Cameroon

SUMMARY:Business Income and Operating Expenses Management
DESCRIPTION:Business Income and Operating Expenses ManagementSBEC ONLINE TRAINING\nBusiness Income and Operating Expenses Management \nJune 24th 2022\, at 3 pm via the zoom platform (Register Now)\nBackground  \nOperating expenses are part of the day-to-day running of the business. They are directly linked to the company’s activity. An income statement is the barometer of a business activity over an accounting period\, that is\, over a year. In Cameroon\, according to the report initiated by the Centre for Economic and Social Policy Analysis and Research (CAMERCAP-PARC) under the Ministry of the Economy\, 72.24% of businesses created since 2010 are non-existent in the May 2016 file of the General Directorate of Taxes\, which formally attests their death. The lack of control over an enterprise’s income and operating expenses contributes to the inefficient management of that enterprise. However\, effective management gives business owners the means to better assess the main items of expenditure essential to the proper functioning of their business\, regardless of the legal form. By taking advantage of the information gathered in the bookkeeping documents\, business owners can easily establish strategies enabling them to set up financing plans for their businesses and increase their business margins. It should also be noted that bankers are also likely to examine them in the context of a loan application.  \nIt is in response to these management challenges and the vital role played by efficient business management in the development of entrepreneurship in Cameroon\, that the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation is organizing an online training course on the Management of Business Income and Operating Expenses. \nObjectives \nThe main objective of the Operating Expenses and Income Statement Management online training is to vulgarize efficient business management and to promote entrepreneurship development in Cameroon through:  \nPromoting an autonomous and efficient business management to SBEC network members and non-members; \nEnsuring a perfect continuation of the SBEC past training on Bookkeeping; \nConvincing and transform non SBEC members into SBEC members.  \nTarget audience \nThis event is open to entrepreneurs of all business sizes (SBEC network members or not) and the general public. \nContact  \nEmail: info@foretiafoundation.org / Tel: (+237) 22 31 15 84 / 654 86 72 54 \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Enhancing Financial Inclusion for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Cameroon
DESCRIPTION:Enhancing Financial Inclusion for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in CameroonTheme: Enhancing Financial Inclusion for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Cameroon\nMay 31st 2022\, at 3 pm via the zoom platform (Register Here)\nBackground\nSmall and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in most economies\, particularly developing countries. In Cameroon\, SMEs represent more than 90% of the country’s economic fabric and contribute 34% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)\, remain a driving force in the national economy\, accounting for 54% of job creation and 14% of overall value-added according to the ministry of small and medium-sized enterprises\, social economy and handicraft. Facing financial inclusion difficulties\, SMEs limit their positive impact on the country’s economy. However\, Cameroon’s low SMEs financial inclusion rate is due to the low penetration rate of financial institutions\, difficulties in formalizing businesses\, high cost of financial services and products\, and the presence of informal financial systems. There is empirical evidence of the effect of financial inclusion on the growth of SMEs. Hence\, an improved financial inclusion of SMEs will develop entrepreneurship and have a positive impact on the Cameroon economy. Faced with these various problems responsible for the low rate of financial inclusion of SMEs\, the Small Business Entrepreneurship Center of the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation is organizing a webinar to discuss how to enhance SMEs’ financial inclusion in Cameroon.\nObjectives\nThe main objective of this panel discussion is to discuss the importance of SMEs financial inclusion for their development and the Cameroon economy. It will be to\n· To Promote SMEs financial inclusion in Cameroon.\n· To evaluate the different existing strategies encouraging SMEs financial inclusions in Cameroon.\n· To recommend strategies that stakeholders could adopt and implement to improve the rate of financial inclusion for SMEs in Cameroon.\nTarget audience\nThis event is open to financial institutions\, entrepreneurs\, financial and monetary policies makers\, and the general public.\nContact\nEmail: info@foretiafoundation.org / Tel: (+237) 22 31 15 84 / 654 86 72 54\nZoom registration link
