SUMMARY:Coup d’État in Niger: Perspectives for a Peaceful Political Transition

Background\nOn 26 July 2023\, the President of Niger\, Mohamed Bazoum\, democratically elected on 2 April 2021\, was overthrown by military  united within the Conseil national pour la sauvegarde de la patrie (CNSP). According to the CNSP’s spokesman\, the removal of the President of Niger was a result of “the continuing deterioration in the security situation and poor economic and social governance” (1). This makes Niger the fourth West African country to suffer a coup d’état in three years\, after Mali (August 2020 and May 2021)\, Guinea Conakry (September 2021) and Burkina Faso (January 2022) (2). The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sanctions against Niger and its rejection of a three-year transition does not seem to be slowing the junta’s momentum. In this light that the Nkafu Policy Institute of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation has organized this discussion to discuss the challenges that lie ahead the country and West African States in general. \nObjectives \nThe general objective of this twitter space is to analyse the impact of the coup d’état in Niger on democracy and governance at both national and sub-regional level. More specifically\, the aim is to\n– Analyse the reasons for the coup put forward by the military junta\n– Analyse the impact of this military putsch on democracy and local governance\n– Analysing the impact of this umpteenth coup d’état on democracy and governance in West Africa\n– To analyse ways out of the crisis for a peaceful political transition. \nParticipants \nThis debate is organised by the Governance and Democracy Division in collaboration with the Peace and Security Division of the Nkafu Policy Institute.
