DESCRIPTION:Covid-19 Pandemic – Then\, Now And AfterBackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has been a global threat and one of the most catastrophic the world has ever witnessed. Since its outbreak in Wuhan China in December 2019\, the world has faced devastating consequences as this posed a threat on global health\, economy and security. This outbreak has shown the continuous need for bold and concerted global effort in the fight against pandemics of this nature.\nThe first case of COVID-19 in Cameroon was reported early in March 2020 and the country responded in a number of ways; from partial lockdowns\, wearing of masks\, physical distancing to name a few. This outbreak has also shaped the activities of the Denis and Lenora Foundation. The Foundation has been actively involved in the fight against the corona virus in Cameroon. There has been health education campaigns at the level of the community\, distribution of face masks and hand sanitizers\, creation of a COVID-19 task force\, daily COVID-19 updates on the Foundation websites\, organization of virtual events on the response and impact of the virus\, among others. In Africa\, most countries have now confirmed cases and the number of fatalities is rising. If allowed to spread unmanaged\, the impact on African citizens and economies will be substantial. Just barely 4 months when Africa recorded its first corona virus case\, there has been an upsurge in the number of cases and fatalities.   According to the Africa CDC\, the continent has recorded 476\,200 COVID-19 cases\, which is considered very low when compared to other continents.\nHowever\, Africa may yet be worst hit by this invisible disease. It’s already fragile health systems\, poverty and very dense urban agglomerations are likely to increase the vulnerability of the continent and maybe the lethality of the virus. DESCRIPTION:June 17\, 2020 at 3 – 4PM Washington D.C Time8 – 9PM Cameroon Time \nBackground \nThe Covid-19 pandemic is the worse health crisis that has plagued the world since the outbreak of the Spanish Flu of 1918-1919\, and the most challenging crisis the world has faced since the Second World War. The pandemic has caused severe economic repercussions in many countries\, in addition to the health consequences with regards to mortality and morbidity. It has brought the global economy to a standstill as all forms of economic activity have been significantly interrupted to curtail the spread of the virus.  Unfortunately\, the African continent has not escaped the health and economic devastation of the pandemic.\nIn Africa\, the economic\, social\, and health problems brought by this pandemic further strain economies which have been struggling to recover from the impacts of a drastic fall in oil and commodity prices since 2014.  According to the World Bank’s biannual Africa’s Pulse report\, economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa\, for example\, is expected to decline from 2.4% in 2019 to between -2.1 and -5.1% in 2020. The region\, the report predicts\, will experience its first economic recession in the last 25 years. If adequate macroeconomic measures are not taken and quickly\, the recession will undoubtedly lead to an economic depression. However\, the depth of the recession will depend on the success of measures taken to mitigate its effects.  Thus\, critical analysis of the macroeconomic state of African economies amid the COVID-19 pandemic and brainstorming on the most effective policy options are urgently needed to not only cushion the economic pain but also lay the framework for a robust and inclusive recovery.\n2. The overall goal of this event \nTo better understand how Africa is coping with COVID-19 and the short\, medium- and long-term socio-economic ramifications on the continent \n3. These measures automatically drives a sharp fall in consumer and business spending. The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) estimates the economic impact of Covid-19 at a minimum of $1 trillion in 2020. Britain unveiled a £330 billion (about $382 billion) stimulus package\, and the US has committed $1 trillion\, in addition to $50 billion in financial aid to states\, cities and territories. What is the case of Cameroon?There is uncertainty over the effectiveness of most social distancing measures as a means of controlling COVID-19. The cultural norms in Africa embraces social gatherings as a means of living together.\nThe big question is how the COVID-19 will affect the social relationships and the economic growth of Cameroon given that she has plans of emerging by 2035.\nThe purpose of this webinar is to discuss on the strategies which the government can implement in order to keep its social and economic environment growing amidst the preventive measures put in place against COVID-19\nEconomic impact.  measures until the end of Q2\, producing a recession.
