SUMMARY:Small Business Management and Entrepreneuship Skills – Yaoundé
DESCRIPTION:CONCEPT NOTESmall and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) contribute around 36% of Cameroon’s GDP\, make-up over 90% of businesses in Cameroon\, and employ above 60% of the population. Yet\, glaring realities indicate that enormous potentials inherent in this sector are unfortunately not fully-harnessed – especially given that more than 70% of SMEs still operate informally.\n Access to finance is a key factor to the growth of SMEs but that notwithstanding\, because of the difficulties faced by financial institutions in obtaining information on the borrowers-solvency\, lack of reliable financial statements of SMEs\,\, absence of guarantee or inadequate collateral and lack detailed business plan \, they  become reluctant to award loans to these SMEs. According to the 2009 IMF study report heavy taxes and 15% interest ceiling on loans to SMEs also discourage these institutions from financing the sector.\nMost SMEs are managed by the owners who do not usually possess the right managerial skills to foster growth of these companies.  Failure to adopt best management practices\, lack of adequate managerial skills\, lack of proper accounting procedures and poor financial planning are constraining the performance and growth of a significant number of small and medium enterprises in Cameroon.\nIn addition to these challenges\, noncompliance with the Tax regulations are factors hindering the development of the SMEs. Based on the General Business Census 2016 (RGE-2) conducted by the National Institute of Statistics – Cameroon 2016\, the majority of companies (78.4%) are sole proprietorship which are subject to the “flat rate tax system”. The SMEs are usually ignorant on the importance of complying with tax regulations and are sometimes not aware of the different tax systems.\nIt is against this backdrop that\, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) of  the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation\, which focuses on equipping entrepreneurs with organizational and business management skills is organizing a training workshop on ‘Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship Skills’\, within the framework of the Canadian Fund for Local Initiative (CFLI) project in Cameroon.\nGeneral objective:\nTo equip owners /managers of Small and Medium size Enterprises with basic Managerial and Entrepreneurship Skills”.\nSpecific objectives: the specific objectives are to: \nFamiliarise participants with the available options for financing their businesses and how to access finance;\nEquip participants with basic managerial and financial management tools;\nAcquaint participants with the different tax systems in Cameroon;\nDemonstrate the importance of moving from the informal to the formal sector. \nTarget audience:\nThe training is open to the following: \nSmall business owners in the formal and informal sectors;\nBusiness Women associations;\nFarmers and agribusiness persons. \nTrainers: \nMr JAVNYUY Joybert: Co-Founder / CEO of COSDEF Group Social Innovation Enterprise; Co-Founder & Coo of AFA Designs Software Development Firm; Founder\, Head Trainer and Lead Consultant of the Center for Entrepreneurship\, Leadership and Business Management Development (CELBMD) Africa…etc \nMr NGEH Edison Tamfu: Business and Development Consultant; Director of EDOAN Enterprise and Permanent Coordinator of REO Group International; Executive Director for Prison Fellowship International; Secretary General for CAYA Africa; Consultant with over 20 Companies and Organizations within and without Cameroon…etc \nDate /Venue/Duration:\nThe workshop will take place Thursday\, September 19\, 2019 at the Conference hall of Mansel Hotel quartier Fouda\, Yaoundé. The Event will run from 09.00 am to 04.00 pm.\nExpected number of participants: 100\n APPLY NOW\nSorry\, we are no longer receiving applications from Yaoundé for the month of September 2019.\nThe next workshop will be in October 2019.

SUMMARY:2019 Nelson Mandela Memorial Forum
DESCRIPTION:ANNUAL FORUM COMMEMORATING THE NELSON MANDELA INTERNATIONAL DAY – FOR FREEDOM\, JUSTICE & DEMOCRACY IN THE WORLD.CONTEXT \nWe at the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation join the international community every year to celebrate the Nelson Mandela International Day\, to shine light on the legacy of a man who positively influenced the 20th century and helped shape the 21st. Nelson Mandela played an influential role in the promotion of democracy\, peace and reconciliation and in unifying and inspiring people from all walks of life across the world. The UN General Assembly and the Assembly of the African Union have recognized Nelson Mandela as the embodiment of human rights\, democracy and peace\, and a champion of the global poor and their dignity. In its resolution 64/13 of 10 November 2009\, the General Assembly has designated 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day to commemorate annually his life and contribution to peace\, international justice and democracy. Moreover\, the Assembly of the African Union declared 2014–2024 the Madiba Nelson Mandela Decade of Reconciliation in Africa.\nIn times of turbulence and national crises as depicted today in many parts of Africa (including Cameroon) where violent conflicts have resulted from struggles for effective and inclusionary governance; perceived sense of  marginalisation and injustice; lack of fundamental freedoms; weak electoral processes and corrupt politico-administrative practices; the rise in intolerance\, social media hate speech and violent extremism\,  Nelson Mandela’s legacy shows us the power of positively resisting oppression\, of justice over inequality\, of dignity over humiliation\, of forgiveness over hatred.  In fact\, this legacy has never been so critically important as today when the international community is committed to promoting a peaceful\, just and inclusive world as depicted in the UN 2030 Sustainable Development agenda which states in its preamble:  “we are determined to foster peaceful\, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence. There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development.” It suffices for us to recall here the essential humanism that guided Nelson Mandela: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains\, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Nelson Mandela stood for the fundamental rights of all human beings\, regardless of gender\, nationality or race. The Nelson Mandela International day is also an annual international day of humanitarian action in celebration of his life and legacy. Also\, it is a catalyst to encourage everyone to change the world through voluntary community work.\nMandela’s Legacy resonates with the mission of the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation to catalyze Africa’s economic transformation by focusing on social entrepreneurship\, science and technology\, innovation\, public health and the implementation of progressive policies that together creates economic opportunities for all. Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy will be celebrated this year at the foundation on the 17thand 18thJuly 2019. While the official ceremony takes place on July 17\, July 18 will be reserved for community humanitarian activities to be carried out by all Foundation staff. The year’s conference will follow the tradition laid last year by awarding the 2019 Nelson Mandela Memorial Award to recognize an individual whom by virtue of his/her actions exemplifies the character and commitment to human rights as espoused and practiced by President Mandela. The Forum will be held under the theme “Nelson Mandela – A Fighter for Justice and Human Rights”.\nPURPOSE OF THE EVENT\n      This event aims at celebrating Nelson Mandela’ life and legacy\, in the context of promoting and protecting human rights and human dignity through social justice\, reconciliation and democratic ideals. Depending on the theme of the year to be adopted\, participants will reflect on Mandela’s lifelong struggle for democracy and peace in the context of the current struggle for sustainable peace in Cameroon through an inclusive and democratic national dialogue.\nEXPECTED OUTCOME\nA summary report on the discussion and recommendation will be published by the Nkafu Policy Institute of the Foundation and be submitted to relevant government and international stakeholders interested in the struggle for sustainable peace and development in Cameroon.\nWHO CAN TAKE PART?\nThe foundation invites to the event\, for their participation\, eminent persons (from the government\, international community\, diplomatic corps\, academia\, civil society representative\, the media) that embody the virtues of Nelson Mandela  on various national and global platforms for the advancement of human rights\, democracy and peace in Cameroon and the world. The event is also open to the general public pending timely registration on the event’s website. In all\, the foundation expects 70-100 people. \n.fusion-button.button-22 .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-22 i {color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22 {border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22 .fusion-button-icon-divider{border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22:hover .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-22:hover i\,.fusion-button.button-22:focus .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-22:focus i\,.fusion-button.button-22:active .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-22:active{color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22:hover\, .fusion-button.button-22:focus\, .fusion-button.button-22:active{border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22:hover .fusion-button-icon-divider\, .fusion-button.button-22:hover .fusion-button-icon-divider\, .fusion-button.button-22:active .fusion-button-icon-divider{border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-22{width:auto;}\nREGISTER TO ATTEND

SUMMARY:Community Involvement in Promoting Peace in Cameroon
DESCRIPTION:Community Involvement in Promoting Peace in Cameroon \nCONCEPT NOTE\nBackground   \nCameroon is at a crossroads in its history. For nearly a decade\, the country\, once described as a haven of peace in Africa\, has been sinking into a spiral of conflict. Institutional solutions have been initiated to ensure a favourable response to the end of the crisis. There is an urgent need to adopt contemporary approaches to democracy that emphasize the importance of citizen participation as vectors of political legitimacy in the development of public policies and laws. In principle\, from a democratic point of view\, it would seem that we should always advocate for greater participation of citizens in the search for solutions.\nPurpose of Event\nThe objective of this event is to propose community solutions through which Cameroon can accelerate its progress towards   resolution of current conflicts. This event is in line with the mission of the Nkafu Policy Institute\, a think tank (research centre) of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation to catalyse the economic transformation of African countries by focusing on social entrepreneurship\, science and technology\, health and the implementation of development policies that create economic opportunities for all.\nTarget audience\nThis event will bring together 60 participants from the public\, private and civil society sectors\, including journalists\, researchers\, displaced persons\, traditionalist representatives\, and students who have the potential to propose  solutions to the current crises in Cameroon. This conclave will provide an opportunity for dialogue between the public and private sectors and between government officials and civil society.\nParticipation fee\nThere will be no registration fees.\nArea of concern\nDuring the event\, there will be presentations on key facts about the current crises in Cameroon. The event will consist of a round table of 4 or 5 panelists lasting 90 minutes. The following questions will be addressed during the event. \nOverview of current conflicts in Cameroon.\nCitizen solutions to the current conflicts in Cameroon. \nLocation of the event\nDenis & Lenora Foretia Foundation headquarter (Simbock)\, Yaoundé Cameroon. \n.fusion-button.button-23 .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-23 i {color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-23 {border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-23 .fusion-button-icon-divider{border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-23:hover .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-23:hover i\,.fusion-button.button-23:focus .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-23:focus i\,.fusion-button.button-23:active .fusion-button-text\, .fusion-button.button-23:active{color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-23:hover\, .fusion-button.button-23:focus\, .fusion-button.button-23:active{border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-23:hover .fusion-button-icon-divider\, .fusion-button.button-23:hover .fusion-button-icon-divider\, .fusion-button.button-23:active .fusion-button-icon-divider{border-color:#ffffff;}.fusion-button.button-23{width:auto;}\nREGISTER TO ATTEND

SUMMARY:Impact of Digital Technologies on Cameroon’s Democratization Process
DESCRIPTION:The Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation is very pleased to announce the 2019 Democratic Governance Symposium to be held under the theme \nThe Impact of Digital Technologies on Cameroon’s Democratization Process.\nThis event will take place on Tuesday 30th April 2019 from 10:00am to 12:30pm at the Foundation’s headquarters – Opposite College Jesus Marie\, Simbock – Yaounde. \nThe purpose of this event is to critically analyse the effects and challenges of digital technologies on democratic governance in Cameroon. We are particularly interested in addressing issues regarding the evolution of the Cameroonian democracy since the advent of a digital manner of doing politics.\nThis event revolves around the Nkafu Policy Institute’s mandate to create platforms for academics and policymakers to engage and promote a culture of democratic values that allows Africans to effectively identify and tackle the governance issues confronting their continent. Engagement with these issues will give academics\, policy-makers and activists a tool for reforming electoral practices to deepen democracy in the country.
