Preparing to Apply
Thank you very much for your interest in applying to our three-week intensive Leadership Program for Young African Scholars at the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation. Before moving on to fill out the short application, please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with our Program by reading this short note and perusing this entire website.
You will find that this program dedicated to providing young scholars with the knowledge, skills and experience to help them better understand and re-orient their role in developing Cameroon and Africa in general. Experiential learning takes the form of executing social action projects, participating in student exchanges on global affairs, having power-sessions with thought-leaders and business leaders and exploring Yaounde as a leadership laboratory.
During our power sessions, students read, watch, study and discuss materials about leaders, leadership theory, and leadership skills. They design creative presentations about these materials and their relevance to the student’s own leadership development, including such important contributors as Nkwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther Kind as well as contemporary leaders and theorists. During these sessions we also build on experiential learning as students practice essential leadership skills such as public speaking, listening, negotiation, navigating difficult conversations, and consensus building.
To build a strong community of students who are dedicated to social change, we organize various team activities to build Program cohesion and camaraderie among students, including team projects, a formal dinner-dance, visits to various monuments in Yaounde. If you are interested in expanding your leadership skills and talents in this way we encourage you to apply. The deadline for the submission of completed applications is May 1st. Applications are processed in the order received and admission is conducted on a rolling basis until the class is filled. Therefore, interested students should apply early.
The application calls for one essay, a resume and one reference. As explained under the admissions criteria page, we seek a wide diversity of students with a demonstrated capacity for leadership, dedication to learning more about leadership, and ability to work well with others.
