1.What does STEM stand for?

STEM is an acronym used to refer to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Promoting STEM education is at the core of the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation

2. Who can participate in The STEM Prize competition?

To be eligible to participate in the program you must be between the ages of 13 and 21. There is no certificate required provided you have a good project to submit.

3. Can a group of individuals participate even if they don’t belong to a school?

Yes, any groups of Cameroonians within the specified age group are eligible to participate. If you are not part of a school, we will require recommendations from community leaders to ensure the project can be implemented. Each project must however be submitted in teams of 2 – 5 members. You must have at least 2 members in a team and no more than 5.

4. Why did you choose the ages between 13 and 21?

13 to 21-year-olds are young, energetic and have the greatest potential of being transformative leaders. Although people of most ages will benefit from this program, research shows that focusing on youths, especially those in their formative years, has the highest potential of significant long-term social impact. By nurturing leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation at this young age, we can quickly expand the pool of credible entrepreneurs in the country and sub-region.

5. In what language should projects be submitted?

Projects can be submitted in either English or French. Through this program, we encourage the strong interaction between young scholars from all 10 regions and from very different backgrounds that’s representative of Cameroon.

6. What is the selection criteria?

All projects submitted will be judged on it’s potential social impact, its relevance and scalability. Each team can submit only one project.

8. Does The STEM Prize offer jobs?

For now it does not. The STEM Prize is an initiative of the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation and the Foundation has specific staff members dedicated to managing this program.

9. What branches of science and technology is The STEM Prize involved in?

STEM education refers to a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, and encompasses a vast array of disciplines which includes aerospace engineering, astrophysics, astronomy, biochemistry, biomechanics, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, computer science, mathematical biology, nanotechnology, neurobiology, nuclear physics, physics, and robotics, among others.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Program

Who is eligible to apply for the Leadership Program?

The Leadership Program seeks outstanding young leaders between the ages of 15 and 21 from all over the world especially those with an interest in developing Africa and Cameroon especially.

What is the duration of the Leadership Program?

The Leadership Program will run for three weeks in July and August 2017. The exact dates will be decided soon. Once the application window open, applications will be processed in the order received. Once accepted into the program, a deposit of $200 USD is required to hold your spot.

What is the cost?

The cost for attending the program is $350 for national students (students based in Cameroon) and $500 for international students. This includes tuition, room and board, transportation during the program, entrance fees and extracurricular activities. Very few need-based financial support is available for partial tuition.

Where would I stay during the Leadership Program?

The Leadership Program at the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation is organized in partnership with the American School of Yaoundé (www.asoy.org). Students live in the dormitory of the American School in Bastos – Yaoundé. The school is equipped with up-to-date dining facilities to cater to your dietary needs. Facilities include four tennis courts, a covered basketball court, swimming pool, playing field, a playground, dormitories and 20 classrooms.

What is the safety and security during the program?

Security and safety at the American School in Yaoundé are taken very seriously. The campus has security guards 24/7. Every measure has been taken to ensure the safety and security of every student.

Does the Foundation accept project proposals?

The Foundation does not accept proposals for outside projects.

Does the Foundation award grants or scholarships?

The Foretia Foundation is not a grant-making organization, and does not distribute grants, scholarships, or funding for outside projects.

What is the Foundation’s grant policy?

The Foretia Foundation generally does not make grants to outside organizations; rather, we direct our financial resources to the implementation of our own initiatives and programs on the ground.

What kind of work does the Foundation do?

The Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation was established to catalyze Africa’s economic transformation by focusing on social entrepreneurship, science and technology, innovation, public health and progressive policies to create economic opportunities for all. The foundation works in partnership with local governments, policy makers, private enterprises, civil society organizations as well as development partners to expand the resources available to entrepreneurs, farmers, and small business owners in addition to improving individual livelihoods. 

Are there internships at the Foretia Foundation?

There is an expanding internship program at the Foundation. The internship program follows the semester system at Cameroonian universities. The Fall semester runs from October to February while the Spring semester runs from April to July. The summer internship runs from July to September. Interns are expected to spend at least 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer session, interns are expected to spend at least 35 hours a week at the foundation. What percentage of my gift is used for management and administrative expenses?

In 2012, 11% of Foretia Foundation expenses supported management and administrative expenses.

Why is an unrestricted gift preferred by the Foretia Foundation?

By making an unrestricted gift to the Foretia Foundation, your gift will go where the need is greatest. The Foretia Foundation staff and volunteers are making a difference by finding real and tangible solutions throughout the Cameroon and Central Africa.

Can I designate my gift to a particular program?

Yes. You can designate your gift to a specific Foretia Foundation initiative by choosing the program in the Donation Information section under the Designation drop-down menu. If you are making a donation by mail, you can check the appropriate box on the Gift Designation section of the donation form.

Will I receive a receipt for my gift that can be used when filing my income taxes?

Yes. You will receive a receipt by mail for every contribution you make to the Foretia Foundation, whether you donate by mail or online. This receipt can be used when filing your income taxes.
